Reflective Mirrored Coatings for Freeway Tunnel Blind Corners
If you have even a passing interest in the topic of Road safety, then you should take a look at the following information. This enlightening article presents some of the latest news on the subject of Road safety.
Freeway tunnel accidents can be catastrophic, as a big fire in a tunnel uses up the oxygen very quickly, and anyone trapped inside soon perishes. There have been numerous cases where simple accidents or even larger multi-car or truck pile-ups have caused chaos and deaths. At some point the fires become so great that fire-fighters cannot even enter the tunnel, needless to say survival chances get to 0% pretty quickly.
Not long ago a massive 30-truck pile-up in a blind tunnel on I-5 in California took 10-lives. The trucks entering the tunnel, which has a slight bend in it, could not see the wreck ahead and as they rounded the bend they saw their fiery impending doom. Even once stopped, more trucks coming from behind continued hitting them one after another.
The fire was so hot it burned all the trucks into hardened puddles of metal and aluminum. The fire lasted for almost 12 hours. The inside of the tunnel, all the concrete walls and base were also melted away, exposing nothing but soot laden dirt - the tunnel was on the verge of collapse. After the fire was finally out and massive burnt debris removed, engineers secured special scaffolding structures to keep the tunnel in place.
It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of Road safety. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.
The question being pondered now by the Online Think Tank is could such a multi-car or truck pile-up be prevented? We believe so, it is possible to put in safe guards to improve on the safety risks. So what is the answer?
Well, it is our belief that the answer for traffic safety in blind tunnels is to have an alert system that warns those entering of blockage using sonar sensors. Additionally we advise the use of reflective coatings on the side walls of the tunnel, which act as mirrors, so those entering can see what lies ahead and any flashing lights, fires, brake lights will be reflected throughout the tunnel. The entire wall does not need to a reflective mirror, perhaps only a strip of about 3-4 feet high along the inside edge on the outside of the curve is all.
